Hackers steal $600 million in crypto from computer game

Frankfurt It is one of the biggest crypto thefts in history: hackers stole around 600 million dollars from the online computer game “Axie Infinity”. A total of 173,600 ethers and stablecoins worth $25.5 million are said to have been captured in two transactions.

Axie Infinity is a computer game in which users participate in battles with previously collected fantasy animals. Each of these animals is a so-called non-fungible token (NFT), a unique digital work of art. These can be sold or rented among the players.

The target of the attack were security vulnerabilities in the so-called nodes within the game, which are operated by the Axie Infinity manufacturer Sky Mavis and the platform Axie DAO. These nodes are used to exchange in-game rewards or tokens, e.g. for sold fantasy animals, into cryptocurrencies or cash. According to the manufacturer, the computer game has 2.5 million active users every day.
