Berlin Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) wants to fundamentally reform the electricity market. The aim is to achieve lower prices for consumers and industry, a ministry spokeswoman told Handelsblatt. Electricity customers should benefit from the fact that renewable energies “produce so cheaply”.

“We want a fundamental reform to decouple the development of end customer prices for electricity from the rising gas price,” said the spokeswoman. The principle that the expensive gas-fired power plants determine the price on the electricity market should be adhered to. However, the associated problematic effects for electricity customers are changed. The “excessive profits” resulting from the regulation should be passed on to end customers.

Gas-fired power plants usually set the price on the electricity market. They are the last to be started at peak times because they are the most expensive generation variant. However, the gas-fired power plants set the price for the entire power generation.
