Athens Costa Navarino is a five star resort on the west coast of Greece’s Peloponnese peninsula. Many celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro and Cristiano Ronaldo have relaxed here. The two designer golf courses attract world-class players.
But Kalamata Airport, through which the stars arrive in their private jets as well as package holidaymakers in charter planes, deserves at best one star: a dilapidated terminal building and an apron on which just four machines can park. This is about to change soon.
Greece is offering private investors a 40-year concession to operate the previously state-managed airport. The offer period expired in mid-December.
Four bidders expressed interest, including a consortium of Germany’s Fraport AG with Greek entrepreneur Dimitris Copelouzos’ Delta Airport Investments and Pileas AE. The company is owned by the Konstantakopoulos family of shipowners, who control the Costa Navarino resort.
