Government agrees on “defense shield” against high energy prices

Berlin The federal government is launching a €200 billion aid fund to relieve citizens and businesses of the increased energy costs. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) presented their concept of “Economic defense against the consequences of the Russian war of aggression” on Thursday afternoon. (You can find the full text of the paper here.)

“The prices have to go down,” said Scholz. The federal government will do everything for this. This should help pensioners, families, craft businesses and industry to pay the prices.

Finance Minister Lindner said with regard to the gas supplies stopped by Russia: “We are in an energy war.” With the defense shield, Germany is now showing its “economic clout”.

Economics Minister Habeck said the energy crisis was threatening to develop into an economic crisis and a social crisis. Russia is about a “destabilization of the democratic order”. Now you use the aids to “resist”.
