Last year, the Federal Agency for Final Storage (BGE) announced that large parts of Germany are generally suitable for a nuclear repository according to geological criteria – but the long and fiercely contested Gorleben salt dome is not among them. The reason given was geological defects.

In the 1970s, politicians made the decision to set up a repository in the Gorleben salt dome. This resulted in protests that lasted for decades. After a long period of trouble, the search for a repository was completely restarted. However, politicians had also criticized the fact that the Gorleben salt dome was removed from the proceedings.
