Google has blocked Russia’s Duma TV YouTube channel. On Saturday, the company announced that it had “terminated” the channel, which broadcasts meetings of the lower house of the Russian parliament, for violating the platform’s terms of service.

A Google spokesperson made the following statements on the subject:

“We will take appropriate action if we find that an account is in violation of our Terms of Service… Our teams are monitoring the situation closely for any updates or changes.”

The response from the Russian authorities to this initiative of YouTube was not delayed. Russia’s official communications agency, Roskomnadzor, condemned the move and made a strong request to Google to open Duma TV’s YouTube access.

Russia also plans to block access to YouTube within the country in response to this situation. The country also blocked Twitter shortly after it began invading Ukraine. After Twitter, Facebook and Instagram shared the same fate in March.
