Frankfurt The inflation rate in Germany rose in June for the first time since the beginning of the year. Consumer prices increased by 6.4 percent compared to the same month last year. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday based on a preliminary estimate. In May, the price increase was 6.1 percent compared to the previous year.

Economists surveyed by the Reuters news agency had previously expected a figure of 6.3 percent for June. On Friday, the European statistical office Eurostat will publish new figures for the entire euro area.

Unlike Germany, other countries such as Spain and Italy reported significantly falling inflation rates in advance. The rate in Spain fell from 3.2 to 1.9 percent. In Italy it fell from 7.6 to 6.4 percent. Even if the methods of calculation differ, the trend in these countries continues to point downwards.

Economists attribute the increase in Germany to special statistical effects, among other things. In the past year, inflation in this country was briefly dampened by the introduction of the 9-euro ticket and the fuel discount, which means that the comparative values are lower.
