Dusseldorf European and especially German companies are increasingly being targeted by so-called activist investors. After a brief lull last year, influential hedge funds have again launched significantly more attacks on companies in Europe, while the number is falling in the US.

The consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal determined that there have been a quarter more such attempts in Europe so far in 2021. Every year it creates an “Activist Alert” in which 1,600 listed companies in Europe alone are analyzed for investor influence. The study is recognized in the industry and is available exclusively to the Handelsblatt.

The analysis shows: German companies are becoming a main target for activist investors. In addition, the direction of attack is changing. So far, the fund has mainly been concerned with a higher distribution or the spin-off of parts of the company. Investors are now increasingly pushing for improvements in so-called ESG issues, such as sustainability and environmental protection.
