Gas trader Uniper could need up to an additional 40 billion euros

Frankfurt, Berlin The second rescue package for Uniper decided in September will not be enough to ensure the survival of the ailing gas trader. The Handelsblatt learned this from financial and government circles. The federal government is therefore preparing to provide the company with up to an additional 40 billion euros, depending on how the gas price develops.

According to experts, depending on how the gas price develops, a small or medium double-digit billion amount could result. “In total, this could result in additional costs of ten to 40 billion euros,” said an insider.

As early as September, the federal government put together an initial rescue package worth 26.5 billion euros for Germany’s largest gas trader. Experts from the federal government now want to work with the company to develop a template with updated figures on state entry. According to current plans, this should happen as early as next week.
