G20 want to condemn Ukraine war – but doubts remain

Berlin Shortly before the start of the G20 summit in Indonesia, the chief negotiators of the European Union and the 19 leading economic powers agreed on a draft for a joint final declaration. This was confirmed by EU Council President Charles Michel on Tuesday night.

According to the Sherpas’ draft, the G20 want to condemn the war in Ukraine. That would be a great success for the West and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). Such an understanding would be taken as a sign that Moscow can no longer count on the support of its powerful partner China when it comes to Ukraine.

However, the question is still open as to whether China or India will actually support the agreement at the level of the heads of state. A US official said it was a strong condemnation of the war by “most members” of the G20 group. It was not initially known who exactly belongs to the group of “most members”.
