Frankfurt A new major player is emerging in the German hospital market: the Franziskus Foundation in Münster and the Marienhaus Foundation in Waldbreitbach have signed a declaration of intent to merge the operational business of both groups. Those involved announced this on Tuesday.

Together, the two companies with 25 acute care clinics and a total of more than 100 healthcare facilities achieve annual sales of around two billion euros. The two foundations as owners of the newly created company and their identities should remain.

The combined company would become the largest nonprofit provider in the industry and the fourth largest clinic operator. The German hospital market is led by the three private groups Helios (Fresenius), Asklepios and Sana-Kliniken.

“A critical size is important in the hospital industry in order to master the challenges in the long term,” says Jochen Messemer, CEO of the Marienhaus Group, explaining the planned merger.
