Fortuna Düsseldorf: Daniel Thioune believes in the miracle of ascent | Sports

Suddenly there is hope again!

After his top series in the past ten games, Fortuna has suddenly come very close to the promotion ranks. With that, the Düsseldorfers have fought for another final. In the Second division top game on Saturday evening at St. Pauli (8.30 p.m. / Sky and Sport 1) the promotion chances are finally decided. Head coach Daniel Thioune (48) has not yet completely ticked off the almost impossible.

The door to the Bundesliga has opened again for Fortuna. With four points behind HSV, who have to play at bottom side Regensburg on Sunday, Fortuna can knock on the top again with a win. But the same applies to St. Pauli, equal points competitor of Düsseldorf in the promotion race.

Away without a win against the competition

In the past few weeks, head coach Daniel Thioune (48) has deliberately not put the A word in his mouth. But now, before the final at the Millerntor, it has also grabbed him: “Now Pauli is in front of us. We would like to climb again, at least to 4th place. That’s why I see a huge opportunity. But St. Pauli sees them too, because both could put pressure on HSV.”

Fortuna was only once in the top three this season! After the 2nd matchday, the Thioune-Elf was relegated. Otherwise, Fortuna leveled off between places 4 and 7 on 28 match days – and once each in places 8 and 9. In the meantime, the gap to third place had increased to eight points. Thanks to just one defeat in the past ten games, Fortuna has secretly crawled in. Similar to St. Pauli, who won 12 of the 14 games in the second half of the season.

Spokesman Tino Polster (65) at the press conference repeatedly referred to the top game as a “blockbuster”. The Fortuna coach takes the same line: “Sky and Sport 1 did everything right by choosing the game as the top game early on. They are two strong teams. Everything else around it offers a huge chance to appear in the rear-view mirror of HSV. I’m looking forward to this game.”

Thioune continued: “It’s a challenge for me to play football against a team like that. I was amazed to see how this team came out of the winter break. That impressed me. We always want to measure ourselves against the best teams. We recently showed that with the win against Darmstadt and the draws against HSV and Heidenheim.”

But Fortuna got NOTHING away from the top teams mentioned: Against the direct competition, there were four defeats in four away games – with a goal difference of 2:9!

This series MUST break – otherwise the ascent is finally ticked off…
