Ubisoft has quietly announced that unlike Far Cry 7, it is based on map escape (Escape From Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown style) is working on a second Far Cry game, a multiplayer shooter. This project, known as Project Maverick, is being developed separately from Far Cry 7, which was originally designed under the codename Talisker.
An Escape From Tarkov-style multiplayer Far Cry game will come
According to Insider Gaming’s exclusive news, Project Maverick underwent a change in scope during the development process and eventually turned into a map-escaping shooter game set in the fictional Alaskan land of Alashnica.
The plot of the game revolves around luring players with the promise of freedom, but dropping them into the middle of a chaotic wasteland where trust is a rare virtue.
In Project Maverick, players have to scavenge the environment to find the necessary supplies to survive in typical Far Cry fashion. This includes hunting animals for leather, sourcing chemicals for tools, collecting plants for medical supplies, and obtaining weapon components and casings for ammunition.
A key feature, the Hideout serves as both an operational base and a secure repository for acquired equipment, vehicles, and more. While the game offers a solo experience, it also enables team play, allowing teammates to share the same Shelter and loot.
The gameplay loop revolves around acquiring gear, leveling up, and gaining perks directly tied to the leveling system. Players must complete in-game contracts (challenges) and earn perks to progress.
Maverick also carries a high-risk dynamic with permadeath in the game, meaning that when players die, they lose all progress, including gear, perks, and levels. When you die, the only items left are the items you left in the Hideout.
While release timelines across the gaming industry are subject to potential delays, Insider Gaming notes that Maverick is scheduled to launch before Far Cry 7, potentially in April 2025, with an Alpha phase anticipated in the first half of 2024.
Given Ubisoft’s past scheduling habits, more information about Maverick could be revealed soon. Share your thoughts on Far Cry multiplayer in the comments below.
