Berlin For the first time, Germany has presented its own strategy for dealing with China. The federal cabinet approved the policy paper on Thursday. Immediately after the meeting, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) presented the strategy at an event at the Berlin China think tank Merics.

With the policy paper, the Federal Government is putting relations with the People’s Republic on a new basis. The central element is reducing the dependence of the German economy on China.

While the coalition agreement still spoke benevolently of China as a partner, competitor and system rival, the China strategy now says that rivalry and competition have gained in importance.

“The aim is not to disconnect us,” emphasized Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Twitter. “But we want to avoid critical dependencies in the future.”
