Berlin, Brussels A momentous change of course in trade policy is in the offing in the federal government: the Federal Chancellery wants to revive talks on a free trade agreement with the USA.

“Germany should remove transatlantic trade barriers and make a new attempt at a free trade agreement that increases prosperity and at the same time protects climate and social policy standards,” writes the head of the Federal Chancellery, Wolfgang Schmidt (SPD), in a position paper written with SPD foreign policymaker Michael Roth , which was first reported by the “Spiegel”.

According to a strategy paper, trade crises and delivery problems in recent years have underlined how dependent Germany is on raw materials and the markets of authoritarian states. Trade agreements with liberal democracies could reduce dependencies on individual countries and diversify German and European foreign trade.
