Federal and state governments on a lockdown course

Berlin In view of the spreading omicron variant, the federal and state governments agreed on stricter corona measures at the summit. “The aim was to prepare the country for the next corona wave,” said Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) after the meeting with the 16 prime ministers on Tuesday evening. The assessment of the Federal Government’s Expert Council on Sunday is the basis for today’s decisions.

“We can’t close our eyes to the wave that seems to be piling up,” said Scholz. The new Omikron variant is already on the advance in Denmark, Great Britain and the USA, and the variant will soon be predominant in Germany as well. “We have to adjust to that now,” said Scholz.
