Taipei Overshadowed by new Chinese military maneuvers near Taiwan, a delegation of FDP politicians visited the democratic island republic on Monday. Against the background of China’s threats, the parliamentarians want to send a signal of support for Taiwan with their trip. During their four-day visit to Taipei, the members of the Bundestag will also be received by President Tsai Ing-wen.

Before the delegation landed, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began new maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait Straits and entered Taiwan’s air surveillance zone (ADIZ) with more than two dozen military aircraft. The Chinese leadership regards Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic and threatens to conquer it. Tensions had recently intensified. The visit of the FDP politicians causes upset between Beijing and Berlin.
