san francisco California prides itself on being a high-tech state. But just like a hundred years ago, the state’s 27 million motorists are sent a sticker every year for vehicle registration, which they have to stick in the corner of their license plate.

That is about to change: Since the beginning of October, car owners have been able to attach digital number plates to their vehicles. Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed a bill in Parliament that would abolish the requirement for metal license plates. “In doing so, we’re digitizing the last thing left about our vehicles that was antiquated,” said Democratic Congresswoman Lori Wilson, one of the initiators of the law change.

With a digital license plate, the number plate appears on smart paper instead of on a metal plate. The technology behind it is the same as a Kindle reader.
