EU prepares for systemic conflict with China

Dusseldorf The systemic conflict between the West and China has intensified significantly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. For this reason, the EU wants to reposition itself towards China. Above all, potentially dangerous economic dependencies should be reduced. “As things stand at present, Europe would be very susceptible to blackmail from China in various areas,” says Moritz Koch, head of the Handelsblatt office in Brussels.

The mobile networks in Germany are operated with Chinese technology. The situation with so-called cleantech products is similarly precarious. “Here we are very dependent on Chinese solar cells and raw materials,” says Koch. However, it is not a question of largely or completely ending trade with China. That cannot be in the European interest. “The non-risky businesses should be continued as before.” However, the system rival should not be strengthened by the transfer of high technology.
