EU and UK agree on Northern Ireland dispute

London, Brussels After years of dispute, the British government and the EU Commission agreed on an amendment to the so-called “Northern Ireland Protocol” on Monday. This brings to an end a conflict that has severely strained Britain’s relationship with its European partners since Brexit. Both sides hope that the so-called “Windsor Framework” will give a boost to closer cooperation in other areas such as foreign and security policy, energy supply, research and migration.

“I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter with our partner and friend,” Ursula von der Leyen tweeted when she arrived in London on Monday afternoon. We have agreed on the principles. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke of a “decisive breakthrough” and “the beginning of a new chapter” in relations with the EU. Among other things, the agreement clears the way for Great Britain’s further participation in the European research program Horizon.
