Ethereum its tenth “Shadow Fork” came to life on Tuesday, 26 hours earlier than expected.
The ETH network continues to conduct tests prior to the transition from the energy-intensive Proof-of-Work protocol to the Proof-of-Stake protocol.
In preparation, Ethereum goes through a series of tests and shadow forks that copy data from the mainnet to a testnet network.
Ethereum Launches Another Pre-Merge Testnet
The last fork occurred at block 15217902 when Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) was invalidated as 54,892,065,290,522,348,390.492.
The final shadow fork brings the project one step closer to ETH’s mainnet upgrade in September. Goerli, the third and final testnet merger, is expected to take place on August 10.
Ethereum DevOps Engineer Parithosh Jayanthi said that this Shadow fork will test versions close to the ones that will be used in the Goerli merger.
As for why this is happening sooner than expected, Jayanthi said there is a marked change in hashrate or computational power that could speed up the process.
This transaction will not be the last Shadow Fork on the mainnet and Ethereum will continue to execute mainnet Shadow Forks until Merge. It was also stated that no significant glitch was encountered during the testing process.
