End of an era: Google Domains is closing!

Google Domains, Google’s domain name service, was made publicly available in 2014 to help users purchase domain names. There has been a significant development regarding the service hosting domain registration, DNS hosting, domain forwarding and email forwarding services.

Google Domains will be shut down and moved to Squarespace

Squarespace and Google signed an important deal today. Under the deal, Squarespace will acquire Google Domains assets. After purchases, the service will be completely shut down. The purchase includes approximately 10 million domain names. Squarespace’s Founder and CEO, Anthony Casalena, made the following statements on the subject;

We are extremely proud to have been chosen to serve clients of the Google Domains business. Domains are a critical part of web infrastructure and an essential part of every business’s online presence. We look forward to serving these new customers as we serve millions of people using our domain products and are committed to ensuring a smooth transition.

On the other hand, the terms of the contract were also clear. Accordingly, Squarespace will accept renewal prices for all existing Google Domains customers for the next 12 months. It will also provide additional incentives to encourage Google customers to build one website with Squarespace and use others.
