US Senator Chris Murphy opposed the fact that the second largest stakeholder in Elon Musk’s Twitter purchase was the Saudi Prince. The Senator called for an investigation into the matter.
Elon Musk officially realized the job he has been after since April and bought Twitter for $ 44 billion. But this money didn’t just come out of Elon Musk’s pocket. Musk raised funds from many investors for the Twitter purchase.
Among these investors, there were also investors from Saudi Arabia and China. While it is said that Saudi Prince Al-Walid bin Talal is the second largest investor in Twitter with a fund of 1.89 billion dollars, an important development took place in this regard today.
“We should be concerned that the Saudis are the second largest owners of Twitter”
“Today, I request the Foreign Investment Committee, which examines acquisitions of U.S. businesses by foreign buyers, to conduct an investigation into the national security implications of Saudi Arabia’s acquisition of Twitter.”
US Senator Chris Murphy announced that an investigation should be launched into the fact that Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest stakeholders in the Twitter acquisition. Senator’s Foreign Investment Committee justification for the call it was as follows:
“We should be concerned that the Saudis, who have a clear interest in suppressing political speech and influencing US politics, are now the second largest owner of a major social media platform.
If this deal happens, two of the most important US social media platforms will be wholly or partly owned by China (TikTok) and Saudi Arabia (Twitter). This is a dangerous trend and we don’t have to accept it.”
The Foreign Investment Committee and the US Department of Commerce have not yet made a statement on the subject. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia’s investment in US companies has reached incredible levels in recent years. So much so that Saudi billionaires and companies, like Amazon and Google, 7.5 billion dollars investment only in this year and until August made.
