Electric G-Class with new battery technology

Munich Hardly any model series from Mercedes-Benz polarizes like the G-Class. Fans of the 2.5 ton off-road vehicle love the timeless design and the sublime driving experience. Opponents, on the other hand, see the model at a base price of 109,296 euros as an expensive polluter that emits 289 grams of climate-damaging carbon dioxide or more per kilometer.

The brand with the star wants to refute the criticism with a fully electric version of the G-Class. As a Stromer, the off-road vehicle is no longer a roaring, often factory-tuned gas guzzler, but whirring along the streets with potentially zero emissions from the middle of the decade. The latest battery technology is installed, promises Mercedes.

Specifically, silicon high-performance cells from the US battery specialist Sila Nanotechnologies are to be used for the first time in the electric G-Class, as the Stuttgart-based carmaker announced on Tuesday. These batteries are characterized by an innovative anode material with a particularly high silicon content. Compared to currently commercially available cells, the new technology should lead to an energy density that is 20 to 40 percent higher.
