Electric Car Battery Made of Wood

A Swedish and Finnish company has produced an ‘electric vehicle battery’ from an organic polymer called lignin, a hard carbon in wood.

As a result of the work of scientists working at Stora Enso, a joint company of Sweden and Finland, a new type of battery has been developed that can greatly reduce the charging time of electric vehicles. The creators of this battery revolutionary they claim to be.

Why is it revolutionary? Because these batteries produced from trees. Let’s take a look at the details of the invention together.

Electric vehicle battery that can be charged in just 8 minutes:

At the heart of the invention is the scientists’ focus on a material called lignin, an organic polymer that makes up roughly 30% of all trees. Scientists, a paper mill waste lignindiscovered that it could be converted into a bio-based alternative to the graphite anodes found in lithium-ion batteries.

By transforming lignin into a hard carbon, the researchers described a “revolution” in battery technology as a low-cost, they succeeded in creating an ultra efficient anode. Lauri Lehtonen, executive officer at Stora Enso, has this to say about the invention:

“In terms of high charge rates, hard carbons can take you where graphite can’t go. Graphite limits are around 40-50 minutes and you can fill it with a very expensive silicon in up to 20 minutes. Lignin-based anodes are just eight-minute charge They have their time.”

lignin, the second most abundant bio-resource in the world. Therefore, the authors of the study anticipate that more environmentally friendly and cheaper lignin-based materials will be produced as studies continue. Stora Enso plans to open a factory where they aim to produce the anodes commercially by 2025. What are you thinking? Please do not forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
