Don’t take it so personally!

The author

Tillmann Prüfer is a member of the editor-in-chief of “Zeit-Magazin”.

I read a report in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” about taking things personally. Taking it personally is a problematic thing when you work together.

Part of working is that you evaluate each other, that criticism is expressed, not too briefly. How else are you supposed to improve? Now there are people who take such criticism professionally, or those who take it personally.

Although taking it personally is such a thing. Criticism has an addressee. And the addressee, i.e. the one who did something wrong, has to change something, otherwise he wouldn’t have to be criticized.

Accepting this criticism personally, but not taking it personally, is not easy. There seems to be a big difference in how criticism is received.
