Difficulty at biomethane trader BMP Greengas puts public utilities in trouble

Biogas plant in Baden-Württemberg

Just recently, the Baden-Württemberg Minister of Agriculture, Peter Hauk, said: “Biogas is becoming increasingly important as a storable, renewable energy source. In contrast to green hydrogen, biogas is already available immediately and is a reliable pillar in the renewable energy mix.”

Dusseldorf Biomethane is a beacon of hope for the energy transition. But there is now a setback in the supply of gas: the wholesaler BMP Greengas can no longer deliver the agreed quantities to a number of customers. According to the BMP, which is threatened with insolvency, the reason is that the biomethane manufacturers themselves cannot supply enough.

Numerous municipal utilities and industrial companies are now facing a problem. They get much less biomethane than they had planned, and possibly at significantly higher prices. The managing director of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU), Ingbert Liebing, said on Thursday: “The loss of contractually guaranteed amounts of biomethane could have negative consequences for the local renewable energy strategy.”

Biomethane is often used in combined heat and power (CHP) plants, through which municipal utilities supply citizens with both electricity and heat. Operated with biomethane, the power plants can supply households with climate-friendly district heating and thus replace gas heating or heat pumps.
