Frankfurt, Berlin, Dusseldorf Germany is running out of workers for helper activities and semi-skilled jobs. Airports lack ground staff, hotels lack service staff and parcel services lack delivery staff. Deutsche Bahn is also desperately looking for many new employees. The state-owned company wants to hire 21,000 new people this year, including many unskilled workers.
“If we want to achieve similar growth as in the last decade, we would need net immigration of well over 400,000 people a year,” estimates Herbert Brücker, migration expert at the Nuremberg Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB).
Businesses are now demanding more openness about immigration. According to the parcel delivery company DPD, unskilled jobs are far too little in the foreground in the immigration debate. “If we don’t tackle this issue, it will become a growth-inhibiting factor for the entire economy,” warns Fraport boss Stefan Schulte.
