Disney's Haunted Mansion may count the theme park ride and Eddie Murphy movie among its chief inspirations, but director Justin Simien was equally moved by his mother's New Orleans upbringing and the rich history of the city. Though he did not write the screenplay, which was penned by Katie Dippold, he infused his direction with a spirituality and cultural mix known intimately to those of Creole descent.
