Frankfurt The implementation of the property tax reform has been delayed. In most federal states, a good 81 percent of property tax returns have been submitted two months after the official deadline, according to the Federal Ministry of Finance. This means that of the 36 million necessary property tax returns, several million are still missing.

While Bavaria has again extended the submission deadline until the end of April, the other states are already sending out the first reminders to the junk dealers. “This will be the last memory. Anyone who does not comply with the obligation to declare must live with the fact that the tax authorities will estimate the information they do not have and set the amount of property tax,” warned Hesse’s Finance Minister Michael Boddenberg.

Late delivery is not always intentional. In some cases, no notifications were sent at all beforehand, or the owner of the property has changed in the meantime. The Handelsblatt explains why you still receive a reminder, how you should react to it and what happens if you still don’t submit the property tax return.
