US streaming giant Netflix will release another cryptocurrency-themed documentary, this time focusing on the Bitfinex hack. The documentary will focus on the theft of 119,756 Bitcoins worth $72 million related to the Bitfinex hack, which took place in 2016 and is one of the biggest financial crimes. Here are the details.
Netflix is preparing to surprise its viewers with a new documentary linked to Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan. As we previously reported, the couple in question was arrested in New York a few days ago for being accused of laundering 120,000 Bitcoins (BTC).
In 2016, the largest cryptocurrency on the market was under $1,000. Today, Bitcoin is trading around $42,000. In November 2021, Bitcoin reached its all-time high of $69,000. The couple tried to liquidate the digital currency using different accounts and fake identities. With institutions able to track cryptocurrencies via blockchain, law enforcement and investigators have linked the funds to the identities of these two individuals.
According to Netflix’s announcement, the documentary will be directed by American filmmaker Chris Smith and co-produced by Nick Bilton.
