Corona: The economy in Germany is shrinking

Berlin The Chancellor is optimistic about the corona pandemic. “Yes, it will get better,” said Olaf Scholz (SPD) in his first government statement in the Bundestag. But it will not improve all too quickly.

This also applies to the economy – which will be hit by the next corona shock. The effects are no longer as drastic as in 2020. However, due to the high number of infections, coupled with the aftermath of the past pandemic waves, which continue to be expressed in serious material shortages, the economic upswing in Germany has for the time being done away with.

The Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Essen (RWI) was the last of the large institutes to receive its economic forecast on Thursday. On average, the four leading economic research institutes RWI, IfW, Ifo and IWH expect gross domestic product (GDP) to grow by just 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021, which is de facto stagnation.
