Corona strategies in Europe are increasingly diverging

Paris, Rome, Madrid, London, Stockholm, Vienna When Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheal Martin largely lifted the corona rules last week, he resorted to flowery words: “Spring is coming. Humans are social creatures and we Irish are more sociable than most. It’s time to be ourselves again.”

Great Britain and Denmark are also making big strides back to normality without restrictions to contain the pandemic. In contrast, the governments in Germany, Austria and Italy are sticking to most of the restrictions. The corona strategies in Europe are increasingly divergent.

The omicron wave continues to ensure record incidences everywhere. But the corona policy seems to have decoupled itself from objective measurements in many cases. Instead, other domestic political and economic considerations determine government action.
