Salvador The sound makes the – new – music: For the first time in years, an official US delegation arrived in the Venezuelan capital Caracas at the weekend, and two days later Washington imposed an oil embargo on Russia.

The diplomatic offensive is no accident. The White House confirmed US military officials were there discussing the energy issue with President Nicolás Maduro. Maduro described the meeting with US officials as “respectful, cordial and very diplomatic.”

US President Joe Biden should know that a re-entry of the country into US energy markets could mitigate the effects of the embargo on the gas pumps. As the Reuters news agency learned from negotiating circles, representatives of the US government promised an easing of the sanctions – provided that oil was delivered directly to the United States. Neither the US State Department nor Venezuela’s state-owned energy company PDVSA responded to requests for comment.
