Berlin The German construction industry started the second half of the year with a record number of orders. Orders in the construction industry were around 7.9 billion euros in July, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday. “Because of the rise in construction prices, that was nominally (not price-adjusted) 4.9 percent more than in July 2020 and thus the highest value of new orders ever recorded in July in Germany.”

In the first seven months, orders were nominally 4.8 above the level of the same period in the previous year. If you exclude the most recent price increases, especially for building materials, real and calendar-adjusted orders were, however, only 1.4 percent higher than a year ago. In this calculation, they have only been 0.9 percent up since the beginning of the year.

The construction industry has come through the corona crisis comparatively well so far. However, supply bottlenecks for important materials such as steel, wood and plastics are creating problems for companies, which are also causing prices to rise.
