Berlin Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner has shown himself open to adjusting the commuter allowance in view of the rise in energy prices. “If there is an agreement to do something about it, the finance minister would not fail,” said the FDP politician on the “RTL Direkt” program.

“Because in fact, in the broad middle of society, people are affected by the rising energy costs. And if in German politics – the Bundesrat is also affected, the federal states, the coalition partners of the SPD and the Greens have a say – if there is agreement in Germany, we will do something, also in the area of Distance and commuter allowances, then the Minister of Finance would not fail – on the contrary!”

In the interview, Lindner called the price increase “an enormous social, enormous economic problem”. A decision must be made quickly to drop the EEG surcharge for the promotion of green electricity, which makes the electricity bill more expensive. “That saves a private household an average of around 150 euros a year. And we have to go further than that,” he said.

Lindner spoke out in favor of “correcting” the so-called cold progression in the tax system. This is a type of creep tax hike, when a pay rise is completely eaten up by inflation, but still results in higher taxation.
