Brussels The public climate debate is usually about the greenhouse gas CO2 and how it can be reduced. Methane, the second most important greenhouse gas, is mostly forgotten. Its reduction is just as important for the fight against climate change.

Methane accounts for 20 percent of the global greenhouse gases – and is more fatal in the short term than CO2. Over a period of 100 years it heats the earth 28 times more than carbon dioxide, and over a period of 20 years even 81 times.

According to the EU Commission, around half of global warming to date is due to methane emissions. And: The output continues to rise. Compared to pre-industrial times, methane levels in the atmosphere have tripled. There are hardly any attempts to implement binding methane reduction targets.
