Berlin At the celebration of Siemens’ 175th anniversary, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced an accelerated transition to renewable energies. “We won’t let the skeptics buy our guts,” said Scholz at the ceremony in Berlin.

Many things have been too cumbersome in recent years, for example the approval procedures. However, dependence on fossil fuels must be reduced if Germany wants to remain a leading industrial country.

Scholz said he was grateful that Siemens supported the sanctions against Russia by withdrawing from the country. The farce about the gas turbine from Siemens Energy, with the maintenance of which Moscow temporarily justified the throttling of gas supplies, has shown: “Russia can no longer be relied on as a business partner and energy partner.”

Numerous representatives of German business, such as SAP CEO Christian Klein and BDI President Siegfried Russwurm, attended the ceremony. Siemens “laid the foundation for the industrial age 175 years ago,” said Scholz.

In 1847, Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Halske founded the “Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske” in Berlin. The first product was the pointer telegraph, with the help of which messages could be transmitted electronically over long distances. The company quickly established business relationships abroad and became one of the world-class German groups.

Over the course of 175 years, the group has changed significantly. In the telecommunications business that formed the roots, Siemens also failed due to management errors. The energy division, the second major pillar, was spun off as Siemens Energy two years ago.

Siemens is developing towards an industrial digital group

Siemens is currently developing more and more in the direction of an industrial digital group. With the “Xcelerator”, which CEO Roland Busch presented a few months ago, Siemens wants to provide the most important digital platform for industry.

The group connects the real and the digital world like no other company, said Busch. The group relies heavily on an open ecosystem with partners. “That would not have existed just a few years ago.”

In view of the many global upheavals, Busch said the group had often survived dark hours in history. After the crises, the company was usually in a better position than before. “Siemens will always reinvent itself and anticipate new technologies and trends.” Siemens is well positioned for the anniversary – “strategically, economically and technologically and is a leader in digitization and sustainability”.

Nathalie von Siemens: “We are part of an epochal change”

The family still holds six percent of the shares in Siemens AG. Nathalie von Siemens, great-great-granddaughter of the founder and member of the supervisory board, said with regard to the digital transformation: “We are part of an epochal change that the world last experienced in the 19th century.” 175 years ago, Werner von Siemens helped trigger the industrial revolution , today Siemens is one of the leading technology companies in digitization.

What makes Siemens is more than the sum of 700 quarterly results, said Nathalie von Siemens. “For me, this more is a culture of positive effects.”

The group can make the possibilities of modern technology possible for the benefit of people and society. In addition, Siemens stands for social innovation.
