Frankfurt The news comes as a surprise: N26 CFO Jan Kemper is leaving the Berlin smartphone bank at the end of January next year. Both parties had agreed on this, as the company announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Kemper only joined N26 last year, initially only in the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and since the beginning of the year he has also been the Chief Financial Officer (COO).

At the end of November, the 42-year-old emphasized in an interview with the Handelsblatt how satisfied he was with his current task. “I don’t interpret my current position as CFO and COO as a bean counter, but feel comfortable as a co-pilot with important operational responsibility,” he said at the time. He also sees N26 as a challenger to the established players. “That’s what excites me,” said Kemper.

Now it comes to the abrupt separation. “Jan has made a significant contribution to further strengthening the structures and governance of N26. In this way, a solid basis for the further success of the company could be created,” said N26 Supervisory Board Chairman Marcus Mosen.

With immediate effect, co-founder and co-boss Maximilian Tayenthal is already taking on the additional role of organizational director. The smartphone bank is currently looking for a successor for the position of chief financial officer. If the post is still vacant at the end of January, an internal team will take care of Kemper’s tasks until the search for a successor is complete, an N26 spokeswoman said on request.

Before his position at N26, Kemper had already helped to build up the online mail order company Zalando as CFO and also accompanied it to the stock exchange. In addition, he was already CFO at the Dax group Pro Sieben Sat 1. According to the announcement, the manager wants to devote himself to other projects in the future, such as his professorship at RWTH Aachen University

N26 recorded an annual loss of 172 million euros last year. When presenting the annual figures in October of this year, Kemper indicated that the bank would probably also make losses in 2022, but these should be lower than in 2021. Co-boss and co-founder Valentin Stalf had previously set the target for the next 24 months to be profitable.

The Berlin smartphone bank collected 700 million euros in a financing round at the end of last year and was valued at 7.7 billion euros at the time. Overall, N26 claims to have around eight million customers.
