Certification hurdle to Apple’s potential mini-LED supplier

Having recently become the world’s first company of 3 trillion dollars, Apple continues to work on mini-LED technology, which it has recently started to use. The company, which is preparing to use the said technology in more of its products in the future, is taking the necessary steps to increase the number of suppliers with which it cooperates.

Apple’s potential mini-LED supplier stuck in certification issue

The company used mini-LED panel technology in products such as the iPad Pro with the M1 chip, which it launched last year. The company, which took action to increase the number of products using this technology, started to look for additional suppliers.

As it is known, Apple already has two mini-LED chip suppliers. The first is Taiwan-based Epistar, and the second is Osram Opto Semiconductors. Epistar has been supplying Apple for a relatively long time, while Osram began working with the company from the second half of 2021.

Apple has been in talks with the China-based company Sanan Optoelectronics for a while to agree with a third supplier. In fact, the information from sources close to the company was that an agreement could be made soon.

However, according to DigiTimes, Sanan could not meet the requirements set to become Apple’s supplier. At this point, the company’s inadequacy in production and various problems regarding patents came to the fore. Thus, the necessary certificate for the agreement could not be obtained.

For now, it is a matter of curiosity what steps Apple will take on the subject. However, it should be noted that the company will focus on mini-LED technology in its new products from now on. Because, in addition to the 27-inch iMac, MacBook Air and Pro models, which are expected to be released in 2022, iPads will be offered to users with the said panel technology.
