California plans its “Lithium Valley”

Research on lithium-ion accumulators

san francisco A basic study is making America euphoric: According to a recently presented study by the so-called Lithium Valley Commission, the region around the Salton Sea in southern California will one day cover up to a third of the world’s lithium requirements.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is enthusiastic about the findings. Just as Silicon Valley has made the United States a pioneer in the technology sector, the region near the Mexican border is to become the world’s largest extraction site for the raw material – the “Lithium Valley”. It will one day be the “Saudi Arabia of lithium”.

The light metal is also called “white gold”. Lithium is central to the production of batteries for smartphones, laptops and electric cars. The International Energy Agency estimates that demand will increase tenfold by 2028, mainly due to the production of batteries for electric vehicles.
