Berlin The federal and state governments have agreed on how they want to promote broadband expansion in Germany from 2023. According to information from the Handelsblatt from coalition circles, the previous funding should be retained in principle. Both sides are committed to the goal of “a nationwide fiber optic coverage by the end of 2030”.

A seven-page “discussion paper” available to the Handelsblatt states: “The tried-and-tested funding procedure should initially be retained.” The Federal Ministry of Transport said that “a good result was achieved for both sides”.

The result will now “flow comprehensively into the federal gigabit strategy”. The ministry now has to coordinate the strategy with the other departments within the federal government.

The Bavarian Finance Minister Albert Füracker told the Handelsblatt: “I am pleased that the federal government is responding to the concerns of the states and that we can probably continue the tried-and-tested subsidy system.”
