Frankfurt The Bundesliga is looking for investors: The umbrella organization of the 36 professional clubs, the German Football League (DFL), wants to sell a minority share in the media rights over a period of 20 to 30 years. The move has been sharply criticized by some fans, but is also controversial among clubs.

The first bids are expected on Monday. According to information from financial circles in the Handelsblatt, six financial investors from Europe and the USA are in the running. The DFL declined to comment.

Supporters of the deal hope to reduce the economic gap, especially to the English Premier League. Potential bidders are not only expected to pay around two billion euros for the 12.5 percent of the media rights, but also networks for international marketing, expertise in digitization and input for modernizing the league. Fan representatives, on the other hand, fear a further commercialization of football.
