Brasilia The free trade agreement between the South American Mercosur countries and the EU is making progress and could be signed as early as the summer. Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira assumes this. In an interview with the Handelsblatt, Vieira explained that Brazil has no intention of reopening the completed negotiation package.
For Brussels, the pact, which has been negotiated for more than 20 years, is gaining importance because of the new geopolitical situation. In the wake of the crises surrounding Russia and China, Europe is looking for new suppliers of raw materials and energy.
The Mercosur countries Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay could offer alternatives, so the hopes. EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen is promoting an “ambitious trade agenda” that should make it easier for Europe to access coveted raw materials.
