Las Vegas BMW presented a car that can change color at the CES technology fair in Las Vegas. The electric vehicle, baptized with the model name iX, has a special casing that works in a similar way to the e-ink display of an e-book reader. This allows it to change between the colors white and dark gray. Other colors would also be technically possible, but more complex to implement. At the presentation in Las Vegas, BMW spoke of a research and design project.

The tailor-made body trim has many millions of tiny paint capsules. The white color pigments are negatively charged, the black positively. Depending on the setting, either white or dark particles can be brought to the surface of the capsules. The result is a fluid change in color.
