Frankfurt The Central African Republic has introduced the cryptocurrency Bitcoin as official means of payment. This was announced by the office of President Faustin-Archange Touadéra on Wednesday. This makes the state the second country in the world after El Salvador to give the digital currency this status.

A bill regulating the use of cryptocurrency was unanimously approved by Parliament last week, according to a statement signed by Obed Namsio, President Touadéra’s chief of staff. So far, the only official currency in the country has been the Central African Franc (CFA Franc).

Central African Republic “is the first country in Africa to adopt bitcoin as legal tender,” Namsio explained. “This move places Central African Republic on the map of the boldest and most visionary countries in the world.”
