Dusseldorf, Munich In March 2023, the British architect David Chipperfield received the Pritzker Prize whose buildings are designed to be climate-friendly. The award, donated by the owners of the Hyatt hotel chain, is considered the “Nobel Prize” in architecture.
“I take this award as encouragement for the contribution that we as architects can make to overcoming the existential challenges of climate change,” said the London star architect.
Wood plays a key role in Chipperfield’s most recent designs. For the new corporate headquarters of the Bavarian Supply Chamber (BVK), David Chipperfield Architects designed an ensemble of three buildings in hybrid wood construction.
Prefabricated building elements made of glued laminated timber are primarily used to construct the building, which is up to 100 meters high and has an area of 75,000 square meters. The wood hybrid construction often combines wood with concrete, which is used for reasons of fire protection, statics and for the foundation.
