Google announced that it had recently changed its account policy in order to increase security among its services. According to this decision, accounts that have been inactive for two years or more will be deleted and their data will be destroyed. Account deletion will start next month.
Unused Google accounts will be closed
The technology giant first announced the policy update in May and stated that deletion procedures would begin in December. With this decision now just a month away, Google is sending various emails to account holders.
According to Google’s statement, there are some changes that people who want to protect their inactive profiles must implement. Users must log in to services such as Gmail, Drive, YouTube, Search using their Google login information before the deadline.
The technology giant announced that small actions such as clicking on an email via Gmail or watching a video from YouTube will reset the timer. This means that these accounts will not be deleted.
Google stated that this policy change targets accounts that were created once but never used. The company stated that hundreds of thousands of accounts waiting idle could create a gap in services. We would like to underline again that account holders who may be affected receive notifications via e-mail.
It is estimated that with this decision, millions of inactive accounts will be deleted worldwide. However, Google stated that this policy does not currently cover accounts belonging to organizations, schools or businesses.
