Dusseldorf The Arcelor-Mittal steel group is partially ceasing operations at several locations. The company cites “the exorbitantly increased energy prices” as the reason. The production is simply no longer competitive, according to a statement from the Luxembourg-based group on Friday.

Specifically, it is about one of the two blast furnaces for flat steel production in Bremen and a direct reduction plant in Hamburg. The Bremen blast furnace is scheduled to go out of service at the end of September, and in Hamburg there is talk of a stop in the fourth quarter.

According to Arcelor-Mittal, there is already short-time work in both plants. This must now be expanded. Short-time work is also already in place at the other German locations in Duisburg and Eisenhüttenstadt.

The planned gas levy by the federal government will continue to burden the company. ArcelorMittal can no longer produce steel competitively. “We see an urgent need for political action,” Germany boss Reiner Blaschek was quoted as saying.
