Cupertino Apple will have parts for communications chips designed and manufactured in the US as part of a multi-billion dollar deal. The multi-year agreement with the chip group Broadcom includes, among other things, components for 5G radio technology, as the iPhone group announced on Tuesday. There was no specific information on the volume of the deal or the term.

The iPhone modems for connecting to the super-fast 5G data radio are currently coming from the chip company Qualcomm. However, Apple has been said to have ambitions for years to develop 5G technology in-house. Qualcomm also assumes that it will lose the modem business with Apple in the long term. Apple had already bought Intel’s radio modem division in 2019 – and thus also gained a development site in Munich.

When announcing the deal with Broadcom, Apple also referred to its own promise from 2021 to invest $430 billion in the United States within five years. The group sees itself on course. Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke on Tuesday of an “unshakeable belief in America’s future,” which is why investments in the country will increase.
